I was invited to participate at the annual celebration of Shivaratri for the Hindu diety Shiva at the northern California asram of Shree Maa, a teacher of Vedic knowledge in the Shakti tantric tradition. Shiva is the Hindu deity of transformation, the third deity of the Hindu trinity of life – Brahma (Creation), Vishnu (Maintainer) and Shiva (Transformation).
These photographs were taken during the 24-hour celebratory period of Shivaratri, including the opening puja (ceremony of devotion), a Vedic fire ceremony (homa) offering propitiation and thanks and multiple pujas inside the mandir (temple) and outside in the forest doing propitiation to Shiva.
Photographed and videoed with a Canon 5DM3 and edited with FCP X.
